The biggest mistake new players make is to play too many marginal hands. If you stick to PH's top 10 you'll be solving that problem, alright. It might preserve your bankroll long enough for you to start learning the game. For an absolute newbie I don't think it's bad advice.
Good players will soon learn what you play, however, and you won't get paid off. You can play many more hands than PH recommends if you have proper position and can get away from the hand if you don't improve. Most of the money in limit hold'em is made or lost after the flop, not on starting hand selection.
